The project
This R&D project analyzes and studies the role of video games and gamification in the critical understanding of history in museums and schools.
“Playing with the past” is an initiative supported by the State Research Agency in Spain, through the Next Generation EU Funds, counting with a funding of 136,000 euros.
The main objective of the project is to understand how digitalization processes are influencing the new ways of making sense of the past, understanding video games and gamification as educational tools that intervene in the understanding of history. The focus is, above all, on the opportunities and limitations that these tools have on the learning of a critical and reflective vision of the past in the young population.

Are video games a limitation or an opportunity for the critical learning of History? Can they help to develop a more critical and reflective education?
Pursuing the goal of reformulating the traditional teaching of History, this research will focus mainly on video games with tasks or missions aimed at colonizing territories.
Thus, the project has two main lines of research:
- The comparative analysis of inspirational practices that use video games to develop historical thinking, in particular on colonialism.
- Experimental analysis of the appropriation processes of users of video games and gamification activities.
